Things You'll Need
- Block of wood, any size Paper Pencil Felt-tip marker Chisel set Hammer Tint tools Varnish or lacquer Paint brush
Instructions
-
-
1
Set the block of wood on a flat surface.
-
2
Draw the sign outline on paper. Cut out the letters or shape.
-
-
3
Place the cut pieces of paper on the wood and trace around them with the marker.
-
4
Now, remove excess wood from around your design. Using the hammer, lightly tap on the end of the chisel to remove sections. Continue until you have a rough engraving of your design.
-
5
Clean the rough lines around your design with the small-point chisel by placing the chisel at an angle and pushing down. Only remove thin strips -- you do not want to remove too much wood.
-
6
Switch to a tinting tool to etch shading or put lines on the background to enhance the design.
-
7
Apply varnish or clear lacquer to the sign.
