Internet Explorer is a web browser developed by Microsoft that allows Windows users visit websites without installing third-party software. Both the Home and Professional editions of Windows XP come with Internet Explorer preinstalled. Windows XP allows you to remove Internet Explorer as well as its shortcut if you prefer to use a different browser.

      Configure Windows XP to show hidden files by clicking the "Start" button. Navigate to "My Documents." Click the "Tools" menu, then click "Folder Options." Go to the "View" tab and select "Show hidden files and folders" under the "Hidden files and folders" group in "Advanced settings." Click "OK."

      Uninstall Internet Explorer 8 by clicking on "Start" followed by "Run." Type "cmd.exe" (without quotes), then press the "Enter" key to load the "Command Prompt." Type "%windir%\ie8\spuninst\spuninst.exe" (without quotes) and press the "Enter" key. Repeat this step using the "%windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe" command to uninstall Internet Explorer 7 as well.

      Click on the "Start" menu, then select "Control Panel." Choose "Add/Remove Programs," then click the "Add/Remove Windows Components" button found on the left. Uncheck the "Internet Explorer" checkbox. Click the "Next" button to remove the Internet Explorer icon.
