A Craftsman six-horsepower lawn mower requires a tune up every spring. This will prevent the engine's parts from corroding, ultimately increasing its longevity as a result. It will take about an hour to tune it up, which will increase the engine's performance and save you money.
Things You'll Need
- SAE 30 oil
- Oil pan
- New gas
- Gas pan
- Adjustable wrench
- New spark plug
Replace the oil. Unscrew the yellow oil cap located on top of the engine. Turn the mower upside down with the oil tank located over an oil pan. Drain every drop of oil into the pan. This is the only way to drain the oil from a Craftsman lawn mower, as it does not have a drain plug. Fill the tank with 21-ounces of SAE 30 weight oil.
Refuel the gas tank. Lift the mower up. Locate the drain plug underneath the gas tank. Unscrew the plug by turning it counterclockwise. Place the open hole over an empty pan and drain the gas into it. Fill the gas tank with fresh regular unleaded gasoline.
Remove the old spark plug and insert a new one. Locate the plug under a black hose on the right side of the engine. Pull the hose off the plug and unscrew the plug with an adjustable wrench. Screw a new one into place and reconnect the hose over the exposed area of the plug.
