How to Clean Vomit Stains from Carpet

Make a cleaning solution at home to remove vomit stains from carpet.

Vomit not only leaves behind an unpleasant stain on the carpet, but it also has a foul odor that will need to be removed. Vomit will cling to carpet fibers, and it must be cleaned as soon as possible to prevent it from ruining the carpet. Instead of hiring a professional carpet cleaner to remove the vomit stain, you can do it yourself with common items around your home. Once you remove the stain properly, your carpet will appear restored to its original condition.

Things You'll Need

• Rubber gloves
• Paper towels
• 1/3 cup white vinegar
• 2/3 cups water
• 1 tbsp. carpet detergent
• Bowl
• Washcloth
• Baking soda
• Vacuum cleaner

Instructions

1. Wear protective rubber gloves before cleaning the vomit. Pick up as much vomit as possible with paper towels.

2. Combine 1/3 cup of white vinegar, 2/3 cups of water and 1 tbsp. of a carpet detergent in a bowl. Soak a washcloth with this solution, and wring out any excess liquid.

3. Test the solution on an inconspicuous area to ensure that it will not damage the carpet.

4. Blot the vomit stain with the washcloth. Rinse the washcloth out, and continue to blot the stain to lift the vomit stain from the carpet.

5. Place paper towels over the stain to cover it. Press down on the gently, and allow the paper towels to absorb the excess solution.

6. Sprinkle baking soda over the stain while it remains wet. Allow the area to air dry, and then vacuum it up.
