How to Decorate a Garden Trellis
A garden trellis adds dimension to your landscape, whether it designates the entrance to your garden or stands alone in your yard. A plain trellis made from wood or metal may not speak to your personality. If not, you can decorate a garden trellis with copper and crystals to create a showpiece on your landscape. Whimsical copper designs and sparkling crystals are not difficult to make and they can transform your plain trellis into a work of art.

- Templates
- Tape
- Stylus
- Sharp shears
- Awl
- 22-gauge copper wire
- Fishing line
- Crystal prisms
- Faceted crystal beads
- Clear, waterproof adhesive

Roll out a 2-foot section of copper foil. Tape a template to one side of the copper foil. Garden-related templates include lady bugs, butterflies, fairies, leaves, hummingbirds and flowers. Local craft stores offer a variety of template designs, but you can also make your own by cutting around images from a magazine. Keep the template size ranges to within a 4- to 8-inch square to decorate a trellis.

Trace around the template with a stylus. Use a dry ball-point pen, a crochet needle or anything with a blunt tip. The objective is to create a cut line in the copper.

Cut the copper outline of the template with sharp shears. Trace and cut as many designs as you like to decorate the garden trellis.

Puncture two holes, side by side near the top of each copper shape with an awl or a nail. Cut an 8-inch long strip of 22-gauge copper wire. Feed the wire through one hole, back to front. Feed the same end of the wire down through the second hole, front to back. Slide the wire so that the ends are even.

Wrap the ends of the wire around the side frames of the garden trellis. Twist the wires together to secure the copper cutout. Place the decorative copper images randomly over both sides of the trellis.

Cut two strands of fishing line measuring 2 feet long each and one strand measuring 3 feet long.

Feed the 3-foot long strand halfway through a crystal prism. Double the line, hold the ends even. Thread faceted crystal beads over the double strand to the crystal prism. Leave 2 inches of double line open at the end. Tie the line over the top of the garden trellis, in the center. Cover the knot with clear, waterproof adhesive.

Repeat Step 7 with the remaining two 2-foot long strands. Tie one beaded strand to the left of the center strand and one to the right of the center strand on the garden trellis. When the sun catches them, the crystal beads and the crystal prisms will throw rainbows over your garden.

Hammer the copper cutouts with a ball peen hammer for an additional accent.
