How to Perform Burpees

Although the name sounds silly, burpees are not a joke. Burpees are an intense, explosive cardiovascular exercise. They require no equipment but work your entire body while challenging your cardiorespiratory system. If you have ever taken a bootcamp workout you have probably performed a burpee. They are popular in athletic training workouts and intense conditioning classes. When you cannot make it to the gym, add a few sets of burpees to your day and you will achieve a full body workout.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand with your feet hip width apart. Extend your arms toward the floor and quickly jump down into a squat, landing with your knees bent and hands on the floor.

    • 2

Plant your hands firmly on the floor shoulder width apart. Kick your legs out behind you while supporting your body on your arms and land in a push-up position.

    • 3

Perform one push-up. Bend your arms to lower your body toward the ground and push back up.

    • 4

Jump your feet back to your chest. Pull your knees to your chest and plant your feet under you.

    • 5

Jump up. Push off the ground with your hands and simultaneously quickly jump to a standing position.

Tips & Warnings

  • Start with a few repetitions and work your way up to 10 or more.

  • As it gets easier, add an explosive jump-up to the end of the move, instead of just a light jump to standing position.

  • Increase the speed of the entire exercise as it gets easier.

  • If it is too difficult at first, skip the push-up. When you land in the push-up position jump back in without the push-up.

  • If you have bad knees or wrists or a heart condition, seek clearance from a medical professional first.
