How to Draw Human Men's Shoes

Drawing shoes can be challenging depending on the shoe.

Shoes can be a difficult item to draw due to the odd dimensions and detailing, especially when the shoes are men’s shoes. A woman’s heeled shoe is usually simple, but a man’s shoe will usually be more difficult.

• Reference picture or shoe

Instructions

1. Determine which angle to draw the shoe from. Turn the reference shoe or look at various reference pictures to find the ideal shoe for the drawing. For a drawing that is a shoe without anything else, position the shoe as you prefer. If you are adding shoes to a man’s body, turn the shoe according to the position of the body.

2. Draw the outline of the shoe. Based on the reference shoe or picture, draw the basic shape. The exact positioning will alter the outline, but in general the basic shape will entail a flat-soled bottom, a rounded edge around the toes and heels and an almost straight line marking the top of the shoe.

3. Add details to the shoes. The particular shoe will determine the detailing, but most men’s shoes will need shoelaces, eyelets for the laces and detailing for soles and fabric.

4. Add shadowing to give the shoe a three-dimensional appearance. Add shadows according to the shadowing of the reference. Usually the main shadowing will be around the area for the foot, around the lacings and on the darker side of the shoe based on the lighting of the room.
