How to Decorate a 40s Bedroom
The 1940s were a time of Big Band music, rampant patriotism, and swing dancing. Because this era was also a time of war, rationing meant that homemakers and interior designers had to rely on their own skills and refurbished materials to create an aesthetically pleasing room. Transport your bedroom back in time to an era of handmade quilts, embroidered floral prints, and delicate touches. Does this Spark an idea?

Scour thrift stores, garage sales, antique stores, and flea markets for one-of-a-kind furniture and pieces to fill your space. Don’t be afraid of too-good-to-be-true deals: often the only thing that separates items in a thrift store from those in a high-end boutique is the price tag. Look for authentic vintage pieces or inspired reproductions that will work well in your space. Inspired by the Art Deco movement, 1940s furniture featured geometric patterns, Formica finishes, chrome detailing, and vinyl fabrics.

Choose bed linens and curtains with small repeating floral patterns, gingham checks, or cherry prints. During this decade of rationing, do-it-yourself craftsmanship and making the most of what you had were a way of life. Any fabrics that were embroidered or quilted by hand will look stunning in a 1940s bedroom. It isn't important to invest in very expensive pieces; instead, add custom touches to affordable items by adding your own embroidery or fabric trim.

Add a feminine touch to the space with pastel colors and delicate materials. The woman of the house usually had the final say in how a space was decorated, so there are definitely some feminine elements that shine in this style. Mauve, pink, and cream were prevalent. Floral print fabric and wallpaper were popular. Look for delicate lace doilies and remnants to use as table runners or bedding throws.

Accessorize with delicate pieces. A brass or chrome lamp will work well in this room, especially when it's coupled with a soft floral lampshade. Again, look for Art Deco–inspired pieces. Streamlined designs with geometric patterned detailing are best for your 1940s bedroom. Fill a velvet-lined jewelry box with cameo brooches, and fill small dishes with potpourri as well.
