How to Donate Used Televisions

How to Donate Used Televisions thumbnail
Your used television may earn you a tax write-off.

If you are upgrading your television to a big-screen TV, you may not want to keep around your smaller, used television. As long as your used television still works, you don't have to throw it out. Instead, you can donate your used television to a local charity in your area. When you make a used-television donation to a charity that happens to be a registered non-profit, you can actually claim your donation on your taxes for a write-off.

Instructions

    • 1

Test your television to make sure that it still works. Just power it on and make sure it looks okay. Typically, you can only donate a used television if it is still in good working condition.

    • 2

Contact a local charity to find out their donation procedure for your used television. National charities that take television donations include Goodwill and the Salvation Army. Local charities include furniture banks and shelters. You can do a search for charities by location on the IRS Web site.

    • 3

Take your used television to the charity or arrange for a pickup if the charity has a pickup service. Remember to take the remote control if you still have it. When you make the donation, make sure you get a donation receipt, which you can use to claim the donation on your taxes.
