How to Change My AIM Name
As of 2010, AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) does not allow users to completely change the name that is registered to an account. This does not mean that you cannot make changes to the name, however. With a few clicks in your options settings, you can quickly change the formatting of your name, which includes spacing and capitalization. You can completely change an AIM name by registering a new name with your same contact information and simply discontinuing use of the old name.

Open your AIM messenger and select the tab “My AIM Menu.” If you are using a Mac, select “Edit” instead of “My AIM Menu.”

Select “My Options” if you are using a PC or “Account Options” if you're using a Mac.

Select “Format Screen Name” for both PC and Mac users.

Make changes to the formatting of your AIM name. You won’t be able to type in a completely new name. You can change the spacing or capitalization of your name, however.

Open your AIM messenger. Under the box where you usually log in, click the blue link that says “Get a Screen Name.”

Enter your desired new name on the screen name request form. You must also enter a password. If the screen name you want is already taken, try a different name or a different combination of names.

Fill out the security question form. Select a question that only you know the answer to. This will protect your account and privacy.

Enter the letters that you see in the security check box and press the “Submit” button.

Return to the login screen and enter your new name and password. Begin using your new AIM name.
