How to Make a Photo Glass
Make unique photo glass gifts from glass products like pendants, plaques, tiles, wine glasses or drinking glasses using specialized slide decal paper made for non porous materials. This type of glass or ceramic decal is produced for both inkjet printers and laser printers and can be purchased in craft stores or on websites like Beldecal, SuperCal or Decal Paper (see Resources).

1
Open your photo imaging software. If you don’t have photo imaging software on your computer, then download a free program like Gimp or Paint.
-
2
Adjust the colors and size of the picture. Go to “Image,” “Adjustments” and select “Image Size,” “Hue and Saturation” or “Levels” to adjust the photograph. The names of these commands may differ slightly from program to program, but are all located under the “Image” drop down menu.
-
-
3
Print your image on regular paper to make sure your image adjustments are correct. Make further adjustments to the image if necessary. Print another trial on photo paper just to be sure you have the photo as you want it.
-
4
Place a sheet of water slide decal in the printer. Refer to the water slide decal packaging for correct printer insertion. Print the photo on the glossy side of the decal. This type of decal is made for non porous surfaces like ceramic, glass, or metal. Allow the ink to dry on the decal for five minutes.
-
5
Cut the outline of the photo the way you want it to appear on the glass. Place the decaled photo in warm water for 30 seconds. Take the decal out of the water and feel the image to see if it starts to move on the backing paper. Place the backing paper and decal as close to the glass object as possible. Slowly slide the decal from the paper onto the glass. Adjust the decal on the glass and wipe with a damp sponge to remove bubbles and excess water. Allow the photo glass object to dry overnight.
-
6
Fire the glass object in a kiln to cone 022 to fuse the decal to the glass for approximately an hour. If you don’t have a kiln take it to a ceramic shop to have it fired.
