How to Decorate With Low Country Theme

Decorating a home with a Low Country theme is all about being casual. It can be compared to decorating a coastline plantation or country cottage. When decorating, you want to draw on the Southern charm that this decorating motif evokes by providing relaxing, inviting areas that invoke the Low Country style. Use all of the senses--it is important to not only decorate with what we can see, but also with what we can hear and smell.

Things You'll Need

  • Braided rugs Baskets Candles Old signs Hammock Desk fountain Sand Seashells Wicker chair Pillows
  • Scatter braided rugs randomly around your home. These rugs will soften the look of hardwood floors, and add texture to carpeting. Braided rugs add color to a Low Country theme.

  • Serve bread or rolls--or biscuits--in hand-woven, country-style baskets at mealtime. Use baskets in other rooms, also, for magazines, unmatched socks, soap in the bathroom, or rolls of toilet paper. Baskets randomly around the home are an inexpensive way to help set a Low Country motif.

  • Hang a few old signs randomly around your home. These signs, no matter if made of wood or tin, can add a touch of the Low Country to any space.

  • Hang a hammock on your porch or in your yard. If you don't have a porch or yard, you can purchase a hammock chair swing that offers the same effect indoors. Hammocks fit in well with a Low Country decorating theme.

  • Decorate with bowls of white sand and seashells and/or sand dollars. The bathroom is a good room for seashells and sand.

  • Light candles around the home that emit scents of the Low Country--for example, scents that are reminiscent of sugar, apple pie, the sea, sea-grass and Spanish moss.

  • Place fluffy pillows in wicker chairs. They offer an instantly comfortable feel.

  • Set a desk-size water fountain on a coffee table. The tranquil sound of water bubbling will be reminiscent of the sounds of the sea. Sprinkle some white sand around the fountain for added effect.
