Cleaning and maintaining a pool is essential to the life of the pool and the health of people who use it. Some pool owners hire a company to come every so often with cumbersome materials to clean the pool. Keeping your pool clean on your own, however, can be less expensive. Scrub the pool's walls and floor. Use a large brush to scrub the walls, and connect the brush to the end of a long pole to reach the pool's middle and floor.

Clear the pool of leaves and debris with a pool leaf skimmer. Attach the skimmer to a long pole and sift through the water, catching all leaves and other dirt that will fit in the skimmer's net.

Clean the strainer basket. The strainer basket is in the pool deck. Pull out leaves and dirt tossed around by your previous scrubbing. Hose down the basket and replace it.
