How to Calculate a Unit Rate
A unit rate is any type of unit per any other type of unit. The most common examples are miles per hour, where miles is the first unit and hours are the second unit, and earnings per week, where a person's earnings is the first unit and weeks are the second unit.

1
Determine your first unit and the amount of the units. For example, if you wish to determine how many miles per hour you drove, the first unit is miles. Presume you drove 500 miles.
-
2
Determine your second unit and the amount of units. In the example, the second unit is hours. In the example, it took you seven hours to drive the 500 miles.

3
Divide the first unit by the second unit. In the example, 500 miles divided by 7 hours equals 71.42 miles per hour.
