How to Dispose of eWaste
Electronics such as mobile phones, televisions and computers contain hazardous materials such as mercury, lead and hexavalant chromium. These dangerous materials pose a threat to the environment when disposed of improperly, polluting the air when incinerated and leaching into the soil and water if left sitting in a landfill. EWaste is comprised of the outdated, broken or just tired electronics that consumers no longer want. When you are ready to upgrade that phone or laptop, it’s important to find an eWaste recycling program.

1
Contact local charitable and nonprofit organizations, schools and churches to determine if there is a need for your used electronic equipment. Find local recycling programs by visiting your state, city or town website, which often lists government-supported programs. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also lists retailer and manufacturer eWaste recycling programs on its eCycling website.

2
Select a recycling program and contact the program’s administrator for details on delivery and proper packaging. Find out if the program offers pick-up of your eWaste, or provides shipping and labeling materials if it‘s not local. Schedule a pick-up or donation time if necessary.
-
-
3
Organize and package your eWaste as directed by the program. Deliver or ship your items, or stay home when your items are scheduled for pick-up.
-
4
Request a donation receipt once you have donated your items. Keep this receipt in a safe place or where you store tax-deductible materials. Enter this donation information when you file your taxes.
