How to Plant a Lemon Tree From a Seed
Save the seeds from a lemon and use them to grow your own lemon tree. Once you remove the lemon seeds, keep them moist until you plant them in the ground. Lemon trees need adequate drainage, sunlight and moisture. The trees thrive in warm and tropical climates. Grow lemon trees for the both the lemon fruit and ornamental purposes. Things You'll Need
- Lemon
- Knife
- Seed-starting peat pots
- Potting soil
- Plastic wrap
- 6-inch transplant pot
- Garden tiller
- Compost

Cut a lemon in half. Remove the seeds from the lemon with the end of the knife by scraping them out.

Rinse the seeds off to remove the juice and pulp.

Fill a seed-starting peat pot with potting soil. Plant one lemon seed in each individual peat pot, ½ inch deep.

Water the soil to keep it moist. Place the pots onto a tray to catch dripping water.

Cover the peat pots with plastic wrap loosely. Sit the tray in a warm location until the seeds sprout. Continue to water the soil to keep it moist.

Remove the plastic wrap and place the seedlings in a window that receives sunlight. Keep the seeds in the peat pots until the roots grow to the bottom.

Transplant the lemon tree seedlings into a 6-inch pot with fresh soil. Plant the lemon tree seedling at the same depth as it was growing in the peat pot.

Water the lemon tree and keep it in a sunny location. Move the pot outdoors during the summer months. Transplant the lemon tree outdoors when it reaches 6 inches tall to a location that receives plenty of sunlight. Loosen the soil to 4 feet deep, and till in compost to keep the lemon tree healthy. Plant the tree at the same depth as it was in the pot.

I planted a seed about 4 years ago. The plant is about 3 feet tall. I live in Wi so I keep it in the house in the winter and plant it in the ground on the south side of my garage in the summer months. WIll this help incourage the tree to bear fruit? It has thorns about 2 inches long. What is the purpose of these?
