The CV, or curriculum vitae, is a document much like a resume that details your personal history for submission to potential employers. While a traditional resume is only one page in length, at most, CVs are known for being up to several pages in length and very detailed. However, you can still create a short CV that is about the size of a resume without sacrificing the information that might get you considered for a desired position.
Things You'll Need
- Word processing software
Include only relevant information to the job you are applying for. It is a good idea to customize each CV to the job you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a job as a lab technician it might not be necessary to include skills you learned in customer service.
Use bullets to list in detail your job history, special skills and academic background. Bullets make information easy to read and digest, without taking up too much space on your document. Create a list for each section that will be simple to visualize and understand. For example, your work history could list each relevant position followed by a list of two to four duties you held at this position.
Be as concise as possible with your language. You will also need to avoid any redundancies that will take up space on your page and compromise the impact of your writing. For example, avoid using any first person speech such as “I” or “my.” Your entire CV is about you so using these words is unnecessary.
Shrink the margins on your word processing document. For example, if your set margin width is 1 inch wide, you can change your setting to ½ inch on all sides. This will allow you to fit more information a single page. You could also change the size of the font, but avoid making your font so small that the employer has to struggle to read it—if this happens, he might not feel the need to continue.
