Gateway Notebooks utilize the Microsoft Windows operating system. Windows is the standard operating system for all PCs; the vast majority of PC programs only run on Windows, making it the operating system of choice for any PC user. While Windows is an efficient operating system, it can over time become slow and sluggish in performance. Fortunately, tools exist that can restore the system to a more efficient state.

      Close all open programs.

      Click on the “My Computer” icon on your desktop.

      Right-click on your hard drive icon (generally labeled “C:\” or “Local Disk.”

      Select “Properties.”

      Click on the “Tools” tab.

      Click on “Defragment Now.”

      Click on “Defragment.” This process may take several hours.

      Close Disk Defragmenter when it is completed. Reopen "Tools."

      Click on “Check Now.” Check the boxes next to “Automatically fix file system errors” and “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.”

      Click “Start.”
