Proper Way to Dispose of American Flags
The American flag is a symbol of our country’s history and the freedoms we enjoy. Singing the National Anthem and saluting the beautiful red, white and blue flag of the United States should give every single American a sense of pride. Tears should well up in our eyes when we are reminded of the people who have given their lives to defend our liberties in this great nation. There are proper ways to dispose of the American flag and it is vital that no disrespect be shown during the disposal.

1
Inspect your flag for tears, holes, thin or faded places in the fabric, or ragged edges. If you deem the flag unserviceable, it should be properly disposed.
-
2
Burn the flag in a respectful ceremony; it should not be simply tossed into a trashcan on garbage day.

3
Call your local American Legion office, if you do not have a fitting place to respectfully burn your flag. They take unserviceable flags and dispose of them respectfully each year on Flag Day, June 14.
