How to Become a Lynchburg EMT
An emergency medical technician (EMT) is a person who is trained to perform basic emergency medical interventions for the sick and injured. An EMT also provides transportation to the hospital by ambulance. Becoming an EMT in Lynchburg, Virginia requires schooling and training to ensure that you have the knowledge to handle emergency situations that can occur in the pre-hospital setting. Lynchburg EMTs are trained in basic life support techniques, and are required to become a first responder before they can earn their EMT certification.

Earn your first responder certification from the Virginia Department of Health. You are required to obtain this certification before you can become an EMT in Lynchburg. The first responder course consists of 40 hours of training in emergency first aid skills. Enroll in an Emergency Medical Technician training course. The Virginia Department of Health website has a link to help you find an available EMT course near Lynchburg (see Resources). You will need to provide a copy of your first responder certification before you can enroll in the course.

Complete your EMT course and get passing scores on all of your course examinations. You will also be required to complete ten clinical hours to gain field experience before you can obtain your EMT certification. This clinical experience will allow you to put what you have learned in your class into practice.

Schedule your state practical and written exams with Blue Ridge Emergency Medical Services (BREMS). The BREMS website (see Resources) has a registration form that you can print, fill out and mail in. You should mail the test registration form, EMT course completion certificate and $50 testing fee to:

Complete the state practical and written exams and obtain passing scores on each. Upon successful completion of both exams, the Virginia Department of Health will issue you an EMT license that is valid for three years. You will then be able to seek employment as a Lynchburg EMT.
