How to Sew a Knife Edge

How to Sew a Knife Edge thumbnail
A knife-edge seam is crisp and sharp.

The term "knife-edge seam" is typically used when constructing a pillow. In fact, a knife-edge seam is the same basic and versatile seam used in most sewing projects, but in the case of a knife-edge, the project is stuffed with something, such as a pillow form. The combination of stuffing and seaming creates an object that is full in the center and narrows to a sharp "knife edge" at the sides.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut pattern pieces from your material and place the coordinating pieces together with their "right sides" facing. The term "right side" refers to the side of the material you want displayed in the finished project.

    • 2

Pin the two pieces of fabric together with straight pins. Keep the edges of the material evenly aligned. Place pins perpendicular to the edge of the material. Space them approximately every 5 inches.

    • 3

Sew the seam using a 5/8-inch allowance, backstitching at both ends of the seam. Trim away excess thread. Turn the right sides out.

    • 4

Lay the material on your ironing board with the right sides facing down. Guide the pointed edge of a hot iron into the seam. Open the seam and press it flat in one motion. Fold the material with right sides facing out. Press the seam to create a crisp "knife edge."

Tips & Warnings

  • Make a knife-edge pillow by sewing two squares of fabric together following the directions for the basic seam. Leave a section of one side open to insert the pillow form or stuffing. Hand sew the open seam to finish the pillow.
