How to Ask for a Promotion in an Email

If you have been working at your job for a reasonable amount of time and feel you have performed well and deserve a promotion, it may be a good time to request one. Though e-mail is the least desirable method of asking for promotion, it may be the only option considering your company structure and the availability of your supervisor. An e-mail can also be beneficial because it creates a trail that shows you have requested the promotion.

Instructions

    • 1

Write on a piece of paper all the reasons why you deserve a promotion. Specify how you have enhanced your department's work product and contributed to increasing the company's revenue. List any helpful skills you have.

    • 2

List any skills you have either developed in your current position or through recent education that qualifies you for the promotion. These can include classes, foreign languages, computer skills, or interpersonal skills based on being at the job for certain amount of time. Your supervisor may not be aware of these skills.

    • 3

List any weaknesses that may keep you from performing adequately in the new position and write out solutions for replacing those weaknesses with strengths.

    • 4

When writing your e-mail, try to avoid sounding passive and write with confidence that you indeed deserve the position. Have a friend, colleague or close relative proofread your e-mail for errors and anything that seems confusing.

    • 5

Attempt to send your e-mail on a less busy day of the week. Each company varies, but Mondays are usually the busiest day of the work week. Perhaps choose a Friday, when people tend to be more relaxed. Be sure to propose a time where you can discuss the promotion in person as well as a date and time where you will stop by the office or contact your supervisor to ensure your e-mail was received. Think about 72 hours to one week after sending the e-mail as it is a short enough time for her not to forget your request but not too long for her to think you are not hungry for the promotion.
