How to Make the Sims 3 Faster

How to Make the Sims 3 Faster thumbnail
Changing a few settings will speed up your game.

The Sims 3 is a huge upgrade from the first installment of the game. The Sims 1 had clunky graphics, limited screen movement and the Sims couldn’t leave home in their own neighborhood. The Sims 3 has improved 3-D graphics allowing full 360 degree turns and Sims that are now free to visit their neighbors. If your game is running slow some tweaking in the settings may be necessary to make it faster.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the game and go to the "Options" menu.

    • 2

Click the “Graphics” tab and look below where it says "Screen Settings."

    • 3

Place a checkmark in the boxes next to “Enable Object Hiding” and “Enable Reflections.” If the game is running really slow it's best to turn reflections off, but is not recommended because it disables all the mirrors in the game.

    • 4

Slide “Edge Smoothing” all the way to the left so it says “Off.”

    • 5

Set the following three sliders to medium: “Visual Effects,” “Lighting And Shadows,” and “Tree Detail.”

    • 6

Slide “Draw Distance” to the right so it states, “High.”

    • 7

Change “High Detail Lots” to “1.” This will greatly improve performance as only the current building is drawn in high detail.

    • 8

Set “Texture Detail” to “Medium” and “Sim Detail” to “Low.”

    • 9

Click the blue checkmark near the bottom right corner and restart the game.

Tips & Warnings

  • Lower the resolution listed under “Screen Size” if your game is still slow.

  • Move all sliders to low only as a last resort. It will increase performance but severely impact the quality of the game.

  • If you lower the resolution to a size your monitor can’t handle, the screen will go blank. Don’t panic; just wait 15 seconds for it to automatically reset.
