How to Remove & Store a Sport Trac Tonneau

The Ford Explorer Sport Trac is available with an optional tonneau cover. This cover is a two-piece unit that covers the pickup bed on your Sport Trac. The tonneau cover is removable, but it is not stowable inside the vehicle. According to Ford, the Sport Trac's tonneau cover weighs approximately 70 pounds; they recommend removing it with the help of an assistant to prevent bodily injury or damage to the vehicle.

Instructions

    • 1

Unlock the front and rear parts of the tonneau cover using your ignition key. The locks are in the center of each panel.

    • 2

Approach your Sport Trac's tailgate. Open the tailgate and lower it. Grasp the rear part of the tonneau cover and push it upward to fold it on top of the front tonneau panel.

    • 3

Pull the release handle on each side of the front tonneau cover. These handles are located at the front part of the pickup bed, directly beneath the cover. Pulling them releases the tonneau cover from the Sport Trac.

    • 4

Lift the folded tonneau cover with the help of an assistant. Remove it from the pickup bed and store it in a safe location, such as a garage. Ford does not advise keeping the tonneau cover in the bed or inside the cabin.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not wish to completely remove the tonneau cover, you can fold the rear part onto the front part and secure it with a strap. Use a bungee cable with one of the front bed tie downs to secure the panel. Do not drive with the panel folded or unlocked otherwise.
