How to Adjust the Tension on Spring Hinges

Spring-hinged doors make opening and closing a door much easier. Install these kind of hinges on almost any type of door. After you attach the hinges, adjust the spring tension so the door opens and closes properly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Close the door all the way shut. Locate the adjustment slot on the top knuckle of the hinge's pin barrel. Find the three holes in the slot, because this is what you will use to adjust the tension.

    • 2

Push the tension adjustment bar provided with the hinge into the hole on the right side of the hinge. Slide the bar to the left side until the hole moves to the center.

    • 3

Insert the tension pin into the opening to the right side of the bar. Let up on the tension bar until the adjustment pin brushes against the right side of the hole.

    • 4

Open the door, allowing it to swing back and forth to inspect the tension. If the spring tension is too loose, then repeat the above steps to increase it.
