How to Stop Getting Telemarketing Calls

How to Stop Getting Telemarketing Calls thumbnail
Stop telemarking calls with the Do Not Call Registry.

In the United States, you can have your telephone number removed from telemarketers list of numbers by signing up for the Do Not Call Registry. Once you add your telephone number to the list, telemarketers will not longer be able to call you; if they do, they risk penalties. There are some entities that are exempt from this prohibition, such as charities and political organizations. In addition, if you have a pre-existing relationship with a company, they have the right to contact you with offers.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Do Not Call Registry website.

    • 2

Click on the "Register Now" box.

    • 3

Enter the telephone numbers you wish to register. You can register up to three numbers at a time.

    • 4

Enter your email address, and then enter it in again in the "Confirm email" box. Do not copy and paste the email address. The confirmation is a check to make sure the email address is entered correctly; if it is incorrect, you won't receive confirmation of your registration.

    • 5

Click on "Submit." Once the number has been submitted, telemarketers must cease calls to your home within 31 days or risk penalties.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you receive a call from a bank, credit card company or other business with which you have a prior relationship, and you don’t want further marketing calls, tell them you would like to opt-off their telemarketing list. They are obliged to honor this request.
