How to Register a Domain Name in South Africa
Registering a domain name is the first step in starting any website. A domain is like a phone number or street address, except for your website. It is broken into three parts that each contain information used to identify the location of your website. A South African domain name looks like MyDomain.co.za. The first part is the name of the website, such as MyDomain. The second part is the broad category that your site falls in, such as .co for commercial. Finally, the third part is the country code, which in the case of South Africa is .za.

1
Create a name for your website. You can name your website anything you like. Some people choose a domain name that describes exactly what the site offers, such as "FreeCreditReport," while others choose a single word or phrase, more similar to a traditional business name, such as "Google."

2
Check to see if your domain name is available. You can use a tool on the Co.za Domain Administration website (see Resources) to check the availability of a domain name. Simply type your name into the search box and click "Enter." Do not be discouraged if the first name you try is unavailable. Finding an available domain name can take many attempts.

Download the Registration Application Form (see Resources). You will need to provide the contact information for the domain owner, the administrative contact (the person in charge of the website) and the technical contact (the webmaster). You can provide your contact information for each separate field if you will be filling all of these rolls.

Email the completed Registration Application Form to coza-admin@co.za with "New domain bka.co.za" as the subject. You will receive a confirmation with subject "COZA:OKAY: New domain 'bka.co.za' added" after the application form has been processed and approved.
