Homemade Picture Frames for Mother's Day

Celebrate your mom with a homemade photo frame.

Mother's Day is an important day for both mothers and children. Children often participate in crafts at school, or with an adult in the home (other than Mom) to make homemade gifts to present to their mothers on this special day. If you want to make something creative for your mother this year, make a handmade and decorated photo frame from cardboard and felt to hold a photo of you and your mom together.

  • Ruler
  • Permanent marker
  • Utility knife
  • Felt (any color you like)

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and draw two 5 by 7-inch rectangles onto a sheet of cardboard with a ruler and a permanent marker.

    • 2

Cut the rectangles out with a utility knife. An adult should perform this task for safety.

    • 3

Draw another rectangle inside one of the rectangles you cut out. Draw the rectangle 3 inches by 5 inches so that there is a one inch border between it and the edge of the cardboard on all sides. To do this, use the ruler to measure from each end and place a small dot at one inch. Use those marks to place your lines. The lines should not be any closer to the edge than your marks.

    • 4

Cut out the smaller rectangle with a utility knife without damaging the frame around it.

    • 5

Place the rectangle with the center cut out over a piece of felt and trace the outside edge and the inside edge onto the felt with a permanent marker.

    • 6

Cut along the lines on the felt to make a felt frame the size of your cardboard one.

    • 7

Apply fabric glue to the cardboard frame and press the felt in place over it. Allow the glue to dry for about 10 minutes.

    • 8

Heat your hot glue gun to medium heat. Supervise children during any use of hot glue guns.

    • 9

Apply a bead of glue along both 7-inch sides on the back of the frame (opposite the felt) and to one 5-inch side. Press the solid cardboard rectangle over the glued side and press it in place. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 10

Use foam sticky letters to spell out a message to your mom around the frame. Simply state, "I Love You Mom" or spell "Happy Mother's Day."

    • 11

Cut two 4-inch strips of magnetic tape and remove the paper backing. Press the sticky sides to the back of your frame. Space them about two inches apart. The magnetic strip will allow Mom to hang it on any metal surface, like her refrigerator.

    • 12

Slide a 3 by 5-inch photo of you and your mom together into the 5-inch side that you did not glue to the solid cardboard.
