How to Win at Minesweeper

Learn how to avoid clicking those pesky mines.

"Minesweeper" is a classic computer game packaged with nearly every version of Microsoft Windows. The goal of the game is to determine which of the many squares in the gray playing grid are mines. Non-mined squares are either blank or feature a number indicating the presence of adjacent bombs. Once all mines are flagged correctly, you win the game. Alternatively, most owners of Windows-enabled desktop computers can use a special cheat code to flag every bomb in record time.

Instructions

  1. Using Logic

    • 1

Start a "Beginner" game by making a few random clicks on the game grid. More than likely, you will uncover large sections of blank squares bordered by numbered squares. Fortunately, Minesweeper is programmed so that your first click will never be a mine.

    • 2

Look for any blocks with a "one" on them. A one-block is touching one and only one mine, which might be located directly above the block, to the sides, below the block, or touching corner to corner. If there is only one uncovered block next to a one-block, it must be a mine. Right-click on the uncovered block to flag it as a mine.

    • 3

Work your way down the line, using the exposed number-blocks as a guide. Ensure that you are continually aware of previously flagged mines and how they are positioned in relation to number-blocks. In "Beginner" games, you might stumble upon a three-block, while in "Expert" games you will come across six- or seven-blocks.

    • 4

Make a few clicks elsewhere on the grid if you become stumped on the first line of numbered blocks. More than likely, you will uncovered a new line and can work from there.

    • 5

Double-click the right mouse button above an uncovered block to mark it with a question mark as a reminder for you to come back to that particular block later.

    • 6

Continue using logic to flag all mines and click all other blocks to win the game. Once you master Minesweeper in "Beginner" difficulty, try "Intermediate" for a tougher challenge.

    Minesweeper Cheat

    • 7

Open "Minesweeper" on your desktop computer and select the desired difficulty and grid size.

    • 8

Hold your mouse cursor over the playing grid. Type the following letters, in lowercase without spaces: xyzzy. Press and hold the "Shift" key and then press "Enter." Release both keys.

    • 9

Look in the upper left corner of your monitor. You will see a small discolored pixel. Hold the cursor over any of the squares on the playing grid. If the small pixel turns black, your cursor is hovering over a mine. If the small pixel turns white, the corresponding square is safe to click.

    • 10

Use the cheat pixel to flag all mines and click all safe squares.

Tips & Warnings

  • The cheat reportedly works on some computers but not on others. For the best results, minimize all other windows and use a dark background to make the white pixel as visible as possible.
