How to Replace the Keyboard on a Dell Inspiron 1505 Laptop

If the keyboard on a Dell Inspiron e1505 laptop malfunctions or stops working altogether, you need to replace it with a new one. Replacing the keyboard is a relatively straightforward process, and it does not require much disassembling. Before replacing the keyboard on the Dell Inspiron e1505, it is important to disconnect the laptop from any components, including docking stations, Ethernet or phone lines, secondary monitors and the power adapter.

      Turn the laptop over so the bottom is facing up and the hinges are facing you.

      Push the battery release latch to the left to pop the battery out of its slot, then remove the battery from the laptop. The battery is located in the top, right corner of the laptop. The battery release latch is located just under the battery.

      Turn the laptop over and open the display to its full extent.

      Insert a flat head screwdriver between the right side of the plastic covering located above the keyboard and the laptop, then gently pry the plastic covering up to detach it. Carefully lift up the plastic cover from right to left to remove the plastic covering. The plastic covering is the piece that has the power button on it.

      Unscrew the keyboard from the laptop and remove it. The two screws are located above the "F4" and "Pause" keys. After unscrewing the keyboard, lift it slightly, then disconnect the cable connecting the keyboard to the laptop by pulling up on the tab located where the cable connects to the motherboard.

      Connect the replacement keyboard to the laptop by inserting the cable into the slot on the motherboard and pushing down on it to secure it.

      Place the keyboard onto the laptop and screw it in.

      Replace the plastic covering by placing the left side onto the laptop first, then pushing firmly down it from left to right to secure it. You will hear and feel it clicking into place.

      Close the laptop and replace the battery.
