Fleas may be tiny, but they can cause an enormous problem if they infest your home. An adult female flea can lay up to 400 eggs in her lifetime, so these small pests can invade your home quickly. One place that fleas like to hide is in furniture, which makes it hard for you to get to the bugs. Fortunately, there are things you can do to get rid of the fleas on your furniture. Diatomaceous earth is safe for humans, but it eats away at the fleas' exoskeletons and kills them. Oregano oil is a natural deterrent that keeps the pests away from your couches and chairs.
Things You'll Need
- Vacuum cleaner with hose attachment
- Diatomaceous earth
- 1 cup water
- Spray bottle
- 2 drops oregano oil
Remove all of the cushions from your chairs and couches. Use the hose attachment to vacuum all sides of the cushions, then vacuum the couches and chairs. Get the hose end into all of the cracks and crevices where fleas can hide. Remove the vacuum bag and seal it tightly. Place it in the freezer overnight, and dispose of it in an outside garbage can in the morning.
Spread diatomaceous earth all over the couches and chairs. Get the powder into the cracks before putting the cushions back on. Spread the powder over the cushions as well. Leave the diatomaceous earth on your furniture for at least a day before vacuuming it up. Avoid sitting on the furniture before you vacuum up the powder.
Pour 1 cup of water into an empty spray bottle and add two drops of oregano oil to the water. Replace the sprayer and shake the bottle to mix the contents. Spray a light mist of this solution over your furniture.
