Doing business in Kentucky means you have to file taxes with the state. Filing taxes as a business in Kentucky requires registration for a sales tax number. The state uses the sales tax number as a means of identification as well as for other purposes. Income made on any property that is sold, leased or rented in Kentucky is subject to a sales tax as are selected services. In Kentucky the seller has the responsibility of collecting the sales tax from customers and remitting it to the Department of Revenue. The Sales tax rate in Kentucky, as of June, 2010, is 6%.

      Request form 10A100 from Department of Revenue either online or by mail. Go to the state's site at revenue.ky.gov. Click on the link for the Kentucky Tax Registration. Download and print it out.

      Call and request a form, by calling 502-564-5170 or going in person to a Taxpayer Service Center. Find the nearest center by visiting the Taxpayer Service Center website at revenue.ky.gov.

      Fill out the application truthfully and thoroughly. Send it to the Department of Revenue at this address:

      Allow the Department 5 to10 business days to process your application. Processing may take longer during tax season, so allow an additional 3 weeks to receive your sales tax number.
