DIY Data Cables
Ethernet data cables are capable of carrying enormous amounts of data, and are the most commonly used wire for high-bandwidth computer network applications. These cables can be spooled off a bulk roll, and cut using a specialized crimping tool to whatever length necessary. From a cost perspective, this is advantageous, and from a performance perspective, it's always a good idea to keep any cable run as short as possible. Making custom data cables will allow for a cleaner and higher-integrity installation.
Things You'll Need
- Cat5e crimper
- Ethernet cable stripper
- Cat5e cables
- T568A and T568B color coding chart
- RJ-45 connectors
Instructions
-
-
1
Place the wire into the opening of the Ethernet stripper, approximately 1/2 inches from the end. Rotate the stripper around the outer jacket a few times to fully score the outer insulation. Pull off the 1/2 inch of insulation.
-
2
Consult the color coding chart to organize the wires in the appropriate order. Insert the wires into the RJ-45 connector, until they are full seated.
-
-
3
Place the crimper teeth over the gold punch-through bar and the plastic strain relief on the connector. Press down firmly until a "pop" is felt, indicating that the insulation on the individual wires has been penetrated.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure that the outer insulation butts all the way up against the connector, with no twisted wires exposed. Failure to observe this seemingly minor detail may compromise the wire such that it needs to be redone.
