How to Get the CD Drive to Work on a Gateway Laptop

If the CD drive on your Gateway laptop computer isn't functioning, this means that no driver is installed for the unit. A device driver is required for your computer to recognize the CD drive--if no such driver is installed, you won't be able to use it. Because the CD drive isn't working, you can't install your device driver via CD-ROM. Luckily, you'll be able to find the driver you need and get your unit up and running using the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Web browser and visit Gateway.com.

    • 2

Click "Support," followed by "Drivers and Downloads."

    • 3

Click "Browse All Downloads." Use the drop-down menus you see on screen to find a listing of all available drivers for your exact make and model of laptop computer.

    • 4

Locate the CD-ROM driver on the "Driver Download" page for your Gateway laptop computer. Click on the link for the CD-ROM driver to download it to your computer.

    • 5

Double-click on the Gateway laptop computer CD-ROM driver. Click "Extract." This will install the driver for your CD-ROM drive. Your unit will now operate correctly.
