How to Swap Motherboards Without Losing Hard Drive Data
Swapping out a computer's motherboard is an often overly feared process. Though motherboards are an integral component of a computer they are physically built well and are adaptive to hardware changes. Exchanging a motherboard with an upgraded counterpart is a relatively simplistic process given the industry form factor specifications, specifically the ATX form factor. Retaining information on a hard drive is a simple matter of rebuilding the hardware database within the operating system after the motherboard exchange.

Remove the old motherboard and install the new one as per the manufacturer's instructions. Following the instructions that accompanied the new motherboard is crucial to retaining the hard drive data. This information is found within the installation manual of the new motherboard.

Insert the Windows operating system installation disc.

Power on the computer and press any key when prompted on the screen. This launches the Windows setup suite.

Select "Repair a Windows installation." This repair process rebuilds the hardware profile for the computer and replaces the old motherboards' hardware ID with the new motherboard. This process takes about 5 - 10 minutes to complete.

Reboot the computer upon completion and boot into the operating system as normal.
