1
Separate your stones according to size. It will be easier to piece the stones together when you have them in piles by size. Huckleberry basalt is a popular stone for dry stack rock walls.
-
2
Dig a trench where your wall will be. The trench should be 6 inches deep and as wide as your wall will be.

3
Place the largest stones in the trench at the bottom of the wall. This will provide a base for your wall. Lay all of your stones flat with one another so the wall will be secure.
-
4
Build your wall up by stacking the stones from one end to the other. Stack one layer at a time while making sure each stone is securely in place. The stones should slope slightly towards the dirt on the back of the wall to add stability. You should also stagger the stones so there are no horizontal or vertical joints.
-
5
Anchor your wall by turning a long stone into the dirt behind the wall. You may need to add additional dirt and pack it down so that your wall will be strong. Save some of the flattest stones for the top of the wall or break the pieces down to form a small border at the top. The wall can be built as tall as you would like but make sure it is secure from behind. If there is no anchor in the back the stones can topple.
