Small glass bottles can be used in decorative garlands.

Use glass bottles to make an interesting, thought-provoking garland to decorate your home, office, or party location. Use your imagination and turn recycled bottles into treasures to be cherished for years. Making a garland from glass bottles is easy using almost any stringing material; however, the stringing material you use must support the weight of the bottles you incorporate into your garland.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect the bottles you want to use for your glass-bottle garland. The number of bottles you need is dependent on the length of the garland you create. You can use any bottle size, but small bottles weigh less. Varying the size of bottles will give different looks.

    • 2

Remove all labels from the bottles. If needed, use label glue remover to remove any label residue. Clean the bottles with soap and water. Dry the bottles.

    • 3

Use your stringing material to tie a loop around the neck of the first bottle and secure the loop with a square knot. You can use beading wire, fishing line or twine as a stringing material. Add an extra knot or two to ensure the bottle is secured.

    • 4

Measure out five inches (or whatever length spacing you want between your bottles) of stringing material. Tie another loop around a second bottle and secure that bottle with another square knot or two.

    • 5

Repeat until the garland is your desired length. Cut the end of the stringing material from the spool, leaving a two-inch tail.

    • 6

Secure the knots by adding a drop of craft glue or two-part epoxy to each knot. Allow the glue to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 7

Hang the garland using picture hooks or the decoration fastener of your choice.

    • 8

Add an arrangement of fresh or dried flowers in each bottle to decorate your glass bottle garland. Insert the flowers into the bottles as if the bottles were a vase. Dried flowers will last longer than fresh flowers, but fresh flowers will give a festive, rich look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add beads to the stringing material in between the bottles for variation.

  • Use identical bottles for symmetry or a variety of bottles for an eclectic effect.

  • Glass bottle garlands make great Christmas decorations.

  • Glass bottles are heavy. Use stringing material that can support the weight of your garland.

  • Hang garlands in a secure manner. Check from time to time to be sure the garland is safe and is not likely to fall and harm somebody.

  • Use discretion when choosing a place to hang a glass-bottle garland. Safety and ease of access are key factors in selecting a site.
