How to Replace an XBox Power Supply

Save

If your Xbox 360's power supply ceases to function, you may need a replacement. Before contacting Microsoft for a replacement or shopping for a new one, try troubleshooting to make sure the power supply is the problem. Replacing your Xbox 360 power supply may take a bit of time, but isn't difficult.

  • Determine the state of your Xbox 360 power supply based on the color of the light on the brick portion of the device. The light should be green when the console is on and orange when the console is off if the power supply is functioning correctly. A red light means the power supply is overheating and needs to be disconnected to cool down. No light means the power supply isn't receiving any energy.

  • Power off your Xbox 360.

  • Disconnect the power supply from the console and unplug it from the wall. Remove the AC cable from the power brick.

  • Look for any physical damage to the power supply such as cracking or frayed wires. Evidence of physical damage means the power supply absolutely needs to be replaced.

  • Reconnect the power supply to the console firmly and plug it into a different wall outlet to see if this resolves the issue.

  • Contact Microsoft through its support site and explain your problem. The company may be able to offer a replacement power supply free of charge if your console is still covered under warranty and will walk you through the replacement process.

  • Shop online for a replacement power supply if you don't want to work with Microsoft. Online sites such as Amazon and eBay, along with countless independent online sellers, have replacement power supply units. Microsoft warns that using an unofficial or unauthorized power supply could affect your console's warranty.

  • Connect the replacement power supply to the power input on your console. Connect the AC power cable to the power brick and plug the power supply into a working electrical outlet or surge protector.
