A double hung window is a traditional style of window, that features two glass-holding frames that vertically slide past each. Double hung windows can have screens on the outside, or can have no screens. Both the windows and window screens should be cleaned as needed to remove dirt and dust. If the window screen is not removed and cleaned, the outside of the window can not be properly cleaned. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Hose
  • Bucket
  • Ammonia or liquid dish washing soap
  • Soft- or medium-bristled scrubbing brush
  • Spray bottle
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar or window cleaning spray

Instructions

  1. Cleaning Window Screens

    • 1

      Remove the window screens from the window.

      Spray the screens with a garden hose to remove dirt, dust and debris.

      Mix three parts hot water to one part ammonia in a bucket. Alternatively, combine 4 tablespoons of liquid dish washing soap per gallon of warm water.

      Dip a soft- or medium- bristled scrubbing brush in the mixture. Brush into the window screen on both the front and back side to remove dirt and stains. Continue dipping and brushing until all window screens are cleaned.

      Spray the screens with the hose again to remove all cleaning residue. Repeat as needed until the screens are clean.

      Allow the screens to air dry.

    Cleaning Windows

      Combine 2 cups water, 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish soap in a spray bottle. Or purchase a window cleaning spray.

      Spray an inside window with the cleaner.

      Use a paper towel or lint-free cloth to remove the cleaner. Starting at the top of the window, rub the cloth or paper towel down the window in a long even stroke. Continue until all cleaner is removed from the window. Repeat as needed for dirty windows. Continue until all of the windows are cleaned on the inside. Repeat the process on the outside of the windows.
