How Do I Register and Get Plates on a Car in NY?

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicle website provides the necessary steps to obtain registration and plates for a vehicle that you plan to own in New York. Different forms or paperwork may be required if you are receiving your car as a gift or if it is a commercial vehicle. If you are registering because of a recent purchase or because you are moving to New York State, the process is straightforward--you should have no problem obtaining the necessary documents.

Instructions

1. Gather the necessary Department of Motor Vehicle documents needed to register and obtain plates for your vehicle. Bring your license and vehicle title. The title must be completely filled out with the buyer's and seller's information, signatures and accurate odometer reading.

2. Bring a completed bill of sale that notes the purchase price of the vehicle. The bill of sale can be handwritten or printed, but must list the following information: buyer's name, date of sale, vehicle identification number, year, make, model, mileage, purchase price and to whom the vehicle is being sold to. Both the buyer and the seller must sign the bill of sale.

3. Bring proof of insurance for your vehicle--you must have insurance coverage before you can apply for a registration. Add the vehicle to your insurance policy if you haven't already and ask your insurance provider for an insurance binder. The binder lists your liability coverages. Insurance providers for New York residents are aware of the minimum state liability requirements--this is not an issue you need to worry about.

4. Fill out form MV-82, also known as the New York State registration and title application. You can get this form at a DMV office, or you can print it from the New York State DMV website. Go to your local DMV and take your number on line---supply all necessary documents when it is your turn.

5. Pay all required fees. The New York DMV accepts money orders, personal checks or major credit cards. Obtain your two license plates, registration and receipts. Put your plates on your car, the registration in the front window and hold on to any additional papers given to you by the DMV.

6. Carry your insurance and registration card (separate from the attached registration sticky that goes in your window) in your glove box at all times. Your title will arrive within 90 days.

• If you are buying a car in New York but live in a different state, check with your state's DMV for instruction.

• If you have special registration needs, contact the DMV ahead of time to ensure you have all of your necessary documents.

• If purchasing from a large dealer, you won't need to go to the DMV office. The dealer is authorized to handle your plates and registration. Ask to make sure your dealer offers this service.
