DIY Sand Flea Rake
Although their name suggests they are similar to fleas found on your house pets, sand fleas are in fact crustaceans found at the beach. However, similar to house fleas, sand fleas are also parasites. They attach themselves to other water creatures and feed off of them. They are generally very small. Although they are detrimental to their hosts, sand fleas make good fishing bait. The easiest way to catch sand fleas is with a sand flea rake. You can make your own sand flea rake for little money and energy.

Things You'll Need
- Drill
- 12-inch-by-18-inch fine wire mesh
- Three pieces of 2-inch-by-6-inch scraps of sheet metal
- Rivets
- 3-foot-long metal bar

Use a drill to make three or four 1/4-inch holes in a 12-inch-by-18-inch piece of fine wire mesh. These holes will allow sand to escape.

Fold the four sides of the wire mesh into a bowl shape. Bend the mesh until it is slightly squared off.

Use a drill to make two small holes on either side of three 2-inch-by-6-inch pieces of scrap sheet metal. You will need two holes per scrap piece. Place each hole 1 inch from either end of the scrap pieces.

Place your drilled sheet metal scraps on the sides of the mesh bowl. Center the scraps on the edges of the mesh with one scrap per side. Once you have the scraps in place, use your drill to pre-drill the mesh through the holes in the scrap pieces. Insert rivets through the holes to attach the sheet metal scraps to the mesh bowl.

Drill a third hole in the center of one of the pieces of scrap metal on one of the 12-inch sides of the bowl shape. The hole will pass through the metal and the mesh.

Drill a pilot hole through the end of a 3-foot-long metal bar. Insert a rivet through the metal bar and into the pre-drilled hole to attach the bar to the mesh bowl.

Tips & Warnings
Use mesh with very fine holes so the sand fleas cannot pass through them.
