Defragmenting your hard drive is necessary to ensure the optimum performance of your PC. Disk defragmenter is a program included with Microsoft Windows that rearranges the files on your hard drive for maximum efficiency. According to “Troubleshooting Your PC for Dummies” by Dan Gookin, disk defragmentation can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. You can still use your computer while the disk is defragmenting, but you may find that your computer runs slower while the disk defragmenter is working.

      Click on the “Start” menu.

      Select “Computer.” (If you have a “My Computer” shortcut icon on the desktop, this menu can also be accessed by clicking on it.

      Right-click on the hard drive that you want to defragment. A pop-up menu will appear.

      Select “Properties.”

      Select the tab labeled “Tools” at the top of the window.

      Click on the button labeled “Defragment Now…”.
