How to Recover Deleted Files on HFS Plus

How to Recover Deleted Files on HFS Plus thumbnail
Recovering deleted files from a Mac's hard drive is not difficult.

HFS Plus, also known as HFS+, is the file system Apple computers developed to replace the initial one designed for Macintosh computers. You can recover deleted files from a hard drive using HFS+ using a file undelete program. There are a number of file undelete programs available for Mac users, none of which are free but many which provide temporary use on a trial basis. An intuitive interface is provided that seeks out the deleted file and restores it for use. Recovering a deleted file does not damage the Mac’s operating system or the hard drive from which it has been recovered.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a file undelete program to the Mac’s desktop--for example, the Data Rescue program (see the link in the Resources section of this article). Double-click the file once it has downloaded. Follow the command menus to install the program onto the Mac’s main hard drive.

    • 2

Double-click on the Mac’s main hard drive to open its window. Double-click on the “Applications” folder to open its window. Scroll down to the file undelete program. Double-click on the icon of the file undelete program to launch it.

    • 3

Click on the “Go” or “Start” button on the file undelete program’s main screen. Wait a few minutes as the file undelete program scans for hard drives connected to the Mac.

    • 4

Click on the icon of the hard drive that has the deleted file on it--the icon is in the left side of the new window that has appeared on the screen. Click the “Next” or “Continue” button to go to a new window.

    • 5

Select a scanning method: "Quick" for a quick scan, “Medium” for a slow scan or “Slow” for the most thorough scan. Click the “Next” or “Continue” button to go to a new window.

    • 6

Wait as a progress bar fills up from left to right as the undelete program scans the hard drive for the deleted file. Click the “Next” or “Continue” button when prompted to do so by the program.

    • 7

Select the deleted file to recover it from the list presented in a column in a new window. Press the “Save” or “Undelete” button at the bottom of the window.

    • 8

Select “Desktop” from the “Locations” drop-down menu in the new window that appears on the screen. Press the “Save” button at the bottom of the window.

    • 9

Quit the undelete program once the deleted file has been recovered and saved to the Mac’s desktop.

Tips & Warnings
