Finding the CV number is easy.

The CV (Card Verification) number is a group of digits that credit card companies use to authenticate transactions, with the goal to prevent fraud on purchases or any other types of payments processed through the Internet. Depending on the credit card company, the card verification number may be called CVV, CVV2 or CID. The card verification number can be found on your credit or debit card. However, the CV number location will vary depending on your credit card company. Thankfully, once you know where to look, finding the CV number is simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which credit card company issued your card by looking at its logo or name (i.e. MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover). The location on your card and amount of digits assigned to your CV number will vary depending on your card company.

    • 2

Look on the back of your card if you have a MasterCard, Visa or Discover card. The CV number is the last three-digit number on the signature section of the card.

    • 3

Look on the front of your card if you have an American Express. The CV number is the four-digit number located on the right side of your card, above the card number. American Express calls the CV a CID (Card Identification Digit.)
