How to Set Up a Wireless Modem With Netzero DSL

Setting up a wireless connection with NetZero DSL requires a router.

Because NetZero provides a DSL modem with your account, all you'll need to set up a wireless connection is a wireless router. According to NetZero, the company doesn't offer wireless modems or routers as standard equipment when you sign up, but the service is compatible with any wireless router you purchase yourself. Installing a wireless router is nearly as easy as installing a regular modem. The entire process should take under an hour.

Things You'll Need

• Wireless router
• Wireless network adapter card (or built-in computer support)
• Ethernet cable (optional)

Instructions

1. Remove the modem's Ethernet cable from your computer and plug it into the Internet or LAN port on the wireless router. Your computer will be able to connect to the Internet via a wireless network adapter card or built-in wireless support.

2. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to disable the new router's DHCP function. Instructions are found in the wireless router's manual.

3. Shut down the computer and unplug the DSL modem for at least 30 seconds to "power-cycle" or restart the Internet connection.

4. Plug the modem back in and turn on the computer. You should be able to connect to the Internet. You'll need to navigate to the manufacturer's configuration website to complete the wireless installation.

5. Go to the website provided in your wireless router manual and enter the username and password given. Change your SSID (network name), then set your encryption passphrase and administrative password.

Tips & Warnings

• If you have a DSL router/modem with more than one Ethernet port, you can leave your computer connected during this process in case you need to get help online. Use a second Ethernet cable to connect the wireless router, then disconnect the computer when you want to switch to a wireless connection.

• You'll need to change your NetZero firewall configuration if you can't connect wirelessly after these steps. Go to the NetZero wireless network website and select "Allow all connections (DMZPlus Mode)" then restart the modem and computer.
