Barret Crochet Hat Instructions
Crocheting your own beret is a simple pattern, if you know how to crochet. Once you have learned to do crochet in circles, you can crochet almost any hat you want. This beret is considered one size only and will fit most heads. Berets make a lovely gift for those you know who may be visiting France or enjoy French culture.

Ch 4. Sc in 4th ch from hook to form ring. Sc in rnds until piece measures 3 1/2 inches from beg. Inc to 6 sts in last rnd. You have now finished the top knot of the beret. This is also the beginning of the top part that leads into the crown.

2
Inc 6 sts evenly spaced. Repeat last rnd until there are 144 sts. This should take you approximately 20 to 30 rows–depending on how tight your stitches are.

3
Dec 6 sts evenly spaced. Repeat last rnd until 72 sts remain, or it fits your head–whichever comes first.
-
4
Join with slip st, turn work inside out. With WS facing, work 5 rnds even. This will make the brim sit tight against your head so that the wind will not take it off.
-
5
Place a nine-inch dinner plate inside the beret. Lightly dampen and let it dry over night. This will ensure that your beret has the nice rounded edges that are its character trait. Tighten any look ends and work in any ends so that your beret doesn't unravel.

Tips & Warnings
Don't make your stitches too tight or your beret will not fit on your head later. Make sure that your hook can slide easily through your stitches.
Try your hat on periodically as you go–that way you know if the brim will fit around your head. It does not have to be exactly to the measurements–it should fit your head instead.
Abbreviations: beg-beginning, dec--decrease, rnd-rounds, st(s)-stitches, ch-chain, inc-increase, sc-single crochet, ws-wrong side.
Not dampening and stretching the crown of your beret can lead to a lumpy top.
This pattern is meant for someone who knows how to crochet; it is not a beginning pattern.
