How to Convert an Ultra DMA Hard Drive to SATA

Ultra DMA is a hard drive communications specification that details the manner in which EIDE hard drives communicate with the rest of the computer. Converting this communication method to allow for communication with a computer system that uses the SATA specification requires only a small converter to be placed between the hard drive and the hard drive's communication cable. You can find these converters online or at local retail outlets.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the adapter to the rear of the EIDE hard drive. This requires matching the side with a 40-pin EIDE connector to the matching plug on the rear side of the installed hard drive.

    • 2

Connect one end of a SATA cable to the back of the converter that is still visible. The SATA connection is labeled on the converter for easy identification.

    • 3

Connect a power cable as directed by the converter's documentation. This is often not needed; however, some models require that a four-pin white Molex connector also be connected to the visible portion of the converter.

    • 4

Connect the free end of the SATA cable to an open SATA port on the computer's motherboard.
