Making a Jewelry Box

Making a Jewelry Box thumbnail
Use your imagination to create your own jewelry box.

Why use an expensive store-bought jewelry box when you can easily make your own? With some paint, decoration, a bit of time and your creative imagination, an old wooden cheese box, a cardboard cigar box or an old hatbox has the potential to be recycled into a beautiful container for your favorite jewelry pieces. After you finish your one-of-a-kind jewelry box, make one for a friend or help your child create a special box for trinkets and treasures.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush or wipe down the outside surfaces of your box to remove dust. Paint the exterior of the box with your favorite colors of acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

    • 2

Attach decorations, such as special designs, faux jewels and other embellishments, with craft glue, and let dry.

    • 3

Spray the exterior of the box with spray acrylic to seal and protect the surface.

    • 4

Cut pieces of felt to fit the bottom and sides of the inside of your jewelry box. Apply the felt one section at a time, starting with the bottom of the box. Paint rubber cement on each section before laying the felt on top and gently smoothing into place with your fingers.

    • 5

Attach the four cork circles to the bottom of the box, one at each corner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Measure and cut smaller cardboard pieces to fit the inside of your jewelry box. Wrap them in felt and use them to make dividers for different jewelry pieces.

  • Use spray acrylic and rubber cement in well-ventilated areas.
