How to Recover Deleted Files in Vista Premium Home Edition

How to Recover Deleted Files in Vista Premium Home Edition thumbnail
The Recycle Bin in Windows Vista allows users to recover deleted files.

Important items sometimes get tossed in the household or office trash bin by mistake, but those items are retrievable before disappearing into oblivion. Microsoft Vista emulates this scenario with the "Recycle Bin," except it is not physical but digital. These digital bits and bytes include documents, spreadsheets and photos, and can be important to recover. Vista users can retrieve these deleted files from the Recycle Bin-like reaching in the trash can, but without the mess.

Instructions

    • 1

Minimize all program windows to the taskbar. If there are several open windows that need to be minimized, click the "Show Desktop Icons" icon in the "Quick Launch" section on the taskbar to minimize all of them at once.

    • 2

Double-click the "Recycle Bin" icon on the desktop to open a folder or window.

    • 3

Left-click once on the file(s) to be recovered so it is highlighted. Look at the bottom of the Recycle Bin folder, at the "Details Pane." Note the file's path and location, e.g., "C:\Users\Documents\Research Paper."

    • 4

Click on the "Restore all items" button at the top of the Recycle Bin folder to recover all files that were sent for deletion. To recover a single file, right-click on that file to show the pop-up menu, then select "Restore."

    • 5

Click on the "Computer" icon on the desktop or open "Windows Explorer" from the Start menu (click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer).

    • 6

Click on the root (starting) folder or drive based on the recovered file's path and location from Step 3 to go to the file. For example, the file's path is "C:\Users\Documents\Research Paper." Click on the "C" drive, the "Users" folder and then the "Documents" folder to arrive at the "Research Paper" file.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the Recycle Bin was removed from the desktop, you will need to restore the icon. Please see References below for details on how to do this.

  • Be careful not to click the "Empty the Recycle Bin" button until you are certain you want to permanently delete those files.
