If you want to avoid using potentially dangerous chemicals on your rugs or carpeting, try making your own carpet foam cleaner. According to Eco-Cycle, homemade cleaners can be mixed from common kitchen ingredients. Using natural elements to make cleaning solutions will result in a house that is clean, but not coated with a layer of chemicals.   • 1/4 cup vegetable oil soap
  • Bowl
  • Electric whisk
  • Scrubber

Instructions

  1. Vegetable Soap

    • 1

      Mix together 1/4 cup of vegetable oil soap with 3 tbsp. of water in a large bowl.

      Insert the whisk into the liquid and set it on medium to high power. Whip the ingredients together until the mixture is foamy.

      Coat the scrubber bristles with the carpet foam and rub the rug in a circular motion until clean.

      Rinse the carpet with clean water and blot it with towels to dry it. Open windows in your home and let the carpet air dry.

    Vinegar Paste

      Mix 1/4 cup salt, 1/4 cup borax and 1/4 cup vinegar until a paste is formed.

      Rub the paste into the carpet and let it absorb for 2 to 3 hours. Make sure the paste is completely dry before proceeding.

      Vacuum the carpet with a standard vacuum cleaner until all of the dried paste is removed.
